Reality or Illusion?

Reality or Illusion?
2025.08.14

Creating a video from just a few words with AI might have seemed like science fiction a few years ago, today, it’s reality.
OpenAI’s video generation system, Sora, is now available in Hungary.
With only a few sentences, it can produce a full video. The real question is: who will use it, and for what purpose?

What impact could this have on authenticity and the spread of disinformation?
Kovács-Nagy Áron discussed the topic with Levente Szabados, Associate Professor at the Frankfurt School of Finance & Management and Lead Consultant at Neuron Solutions.

This is not a new phenomenon: even in the past, historical photographs were altered to remove people, or film frames were manipulated. Such methods had significant influence even then, and today, this is exponentially more true, as anyone can now easily and at minimal cost create realistic-looking but false videos.

For the public, this is a learning process. Just as no one seriously believes that dinosaurs roam Budapest after watching a dinosaur movie, we must learn to recognise that certain spectacular or sensational content is not necessarily real. Until this becomes second nature, such content will pose a serious risk.

What could be the societal consequences?
The primary danger lies in the lack of reflection. If people naively accept whatever they see, whether from the online world or from a seemingly reputable medium, they can easily become victims of misinformation and manipulation.

The secondary danger is more subtle: if people become aware that they can be deceived, and that not everything they see is true, overall trust levels may decline.
This is a societal challenge, because when there is a crisis of trust, it becomes harder to reach consensus on important issues. Without commonly accepted reference points, political and social processes based on agreement can break down.

Therefore, the weakening of social consensus is a secondary danger that we must actively work to prevent.
