AI or reality?

AI or reality?
2023.06.01

What future do the new AI technologies bring? Will we be able to distinguish the real from the generated? On Kossuth Radio 2023.05.12, Levente Szabados, co-founder and senior consultant of Neuron Solutions, was interviewed on the topic.

AI generated images

What could these mean for our future? How can we recognise AI-generated images?

At the moment, AI-generated images are still often recognisable, as small details are still telltale signs: for example, AI has difficulty representing fingers correctly and often makes mistakes about their number.

But this will not last forever. According to our expert, we can expect substantial improvements in these models in about 6 months, while in human terms there is little chance of mastering the ability to tell whether an image is real or artificial in that amount of time.

However, this does not mean that there is no solution. There are computer programs that can easily detect when an image is not natural.

AI-generated sound patterns

The question in this area is similar: What could these mean for our future? How can we recognise AI-generated sound patterns?

Recently, a publicly available AI model called Bark has been released that can now cough, laugh and mimic our own voice and mannerisms based on short voice patterns. So it’s clear that we can expect similar advancements in the field of voice patterns as we have seen with generated images.

How can we manage this new world? Just as we are used to reading the news critically, we must also get used to critically evaluating voice samples and images.

What new AI-based technologies can we expect in the near or distant future?

The state of technological development is such that a few months is now the medium term and a year is a long way off. Take for example ChatGPT, released in November last year, and other large language models that not only generate texts with amazing efficiency, but are already able to use tools (such as the internet), browse or even program for us, and perform various online services.

Levente: “So we don’t have to keep our eyes on what new breakthrough technologies are yet to come, because it is very hard to see and it is happening very fast.”

“It’s more important to prepare and adapt to a new world in which AI-generated content and technologies are widely available and in use. This includes critical thinking, evaluating information and learning new skills in order to effectively navigate this AI-based society.” – added ChatGPT to conclude our post.
