Our colleague, Ottó has talked about how Artificial Intelligence (AI) can be applied in sport in two interviews in the programme Trend-idők of Radio Kossuth.
On the first occasion, he addressed how AI can help football coaches and others working with the team define match tactics, give instructions to players for specific situations or even gather intelligence on strengths and weaknesses of rival teams. AI will make it faster and more accurate during the actual match to analyse our players’ performance on the basis of inputs gathered via video streams or sensors fixed on players. In addition, it will make coaches and team strategists more informed about other teams and their match performance with intelligence gathered on the public internet. This is especially important for clubs with smaller budget (and coaching resources) which cannot send scouts to other matches or continuously analyse TV broadcast football matches.
In the second interview, Ottó gave a couple of examples of „sport AI”. Among other things, he described a solution which evaluates the exercises in artistic gymnastics to help judges give more accurate scores. Another use case mentioned is a visual analytics for athletics to draw the ideal trajectory of a jump or throwing and indicate what would be the jumping or throwing distance that could have been reached. Such a tool makes live TV coverage more spectacular, but of course also supports coaches’ work.
