Gedeon Richter Plc is one of the largest, stock exchange listed pharmaceutical companies in Hungary, shipping to more than 100 countries and having direct presence in nearly 50 countries worldwide. Gedeon Richter Plc has always been careful about the quality of its products and the activities behind them. The company soon realized that the application of artificial intelligence (AI) in this industry also opens up new perspectives in analysis, prediction or even optimization.
In September 2019, Neuron Solutions Ltd started a joint pilot project with Gedeon Richter Plc’s team of data scientists to apply AI to further improve the quality of tablet manufacturing. The primary objective of the pilot project is to improve the tablet manufacturing process, product quality assurance and waste management by statistical and AI methods. While predicting a specific target scrap rate factor or defining the dissolution rate in the project itself is an interesting challenge for data scientists and AI experts, during the pilot, Neuron Solutions experts also placed particular emphasis on knowledge transfer. In this spirit, during the pilot project, we investigated the applicability of both classical statistical and data science methods, basic machine learning solutions, and advanced deep learning methods to current and future tasks, and then, with the involvement of Richter, developed models for this production data.
The systematic development of competencies during the joint project work enables the team of Gedeon Richter Plc, after the implementation of the pilot project, to be able to start and execute AI development projects on its own or, if necessary, to select and apply supplier AI systems.
